RAY SHARPLEY | CLASS OF '90 | INDUCTED: SEPTEMBER 30, 2011 Ray Sharpley was a tall, crafty left-hander who dominated the Mercer County high school baseball scene in 1989 and 1990. The Northstars started the 1989 season at 1-4 and then went on an eight game win streak that was highlighted by consecutive no-hitters by Ray against Lawrence and Pennington Prep. Ray finished the season with a 6-1 record and a 0.93 ERA. Former baseball coach Pete Capone explained, "Ray was a tough competitor who worked hard to improve his skills, often being the last one off the practice field. When he was on the mound, he attacked hitters with his variety of pitches. His fastball and slider were outstanding and his ability to change speeds and locations had opponents shaking their heads." Ray's career record 13-3 helped the 'Stars win their first NJSIAA tournament game when he pitched a one-hitter against township rival Steinert in a 1989 first-round game. In post-season recognition, Ray was selected to The Trentonian and The Times Mercer County 1st teams, the Carpenter Cup starting pitcher, and to the Newark Star Ledger All-State third team.
