KATE GARLAND | CLASS OF '99 | INDUCTED: SEPTEMBER 12, 2014


Kate Garland, a 1999 graduate, was the winner of 9 varsity letters.

As a freshman softball player, she won the starting shortstop position which she held for four years, and was a First Team All-CVC selection as a junior and senior. A player described by former coach Peg Howell as "a hard worker who led by example on and off the field", Kate was named to the Newark Star Ledger's All-State Group III Team in her junior year.

In soccer, Kate was a four-year starter for the Lady Northstars under Coach Elyse Diamond, who described her sweeper as "a smart and skillful player who had good field vision and was very coachable". She was a senior captain who won First Team ALL-CVC honors and NJSCA state recognition.

Kate was also a member of the girls' basketball team during the 1997-98 season.

Kate continued her softball career at Salisbury University, where she earned a BS degree in Elementary Education and starred for the Sea Gulls. By graduation, she was the all-time leader in assists and sacrifices. Kate is now a teacher at the Pittsville Elementary School in Maryland, where in 2013 she was selected as the school's Teacher of the Year. Always the athlete, Kate competes regularly in half marathons, and Spring and Olympic distance triathlons.
